Buying a home is one of the biggest steps in an immigrant family's life, and a Griha Pravesh puja marks it with gratitude. Here is how to plan one in the US.
Choosing the muhurat
Griha Pravesh muhurats depend on the tithi, nakshatra, weekday and lagna, calculated for your city. Traditionally Kharmas, Pitru Paksha and Chaturmas are avoided where possible. Because US closings often fix the move-in date, we usually look for the best window within your available weekends.
The ceremony
The family enters with a filled kalash, the pandit performs Ganesh puja, Vastu puja and Navagraha puja, a havan purifies the house, and milk is boiled until it overflows as a sign of abundance. Sanctified water is sprinkled in every room.
Checklist
Kalash with mango leaves and coconut; mango-leaf toran; roli, haldi, akshat; flowers; fruits and sweets; a new pot and milk; havan samagri and ghee (or a low-smoke alternative); a small table for the altar; a list of family names and gotra.
Rented homes and apartments
Griha Pravesh is perfectly appropriate for rentals. Keep the havan small or skip it in apartments, and focus on Ganesh puja, Vastu puja and the milk ritual.
