Numerology (Mulank & Bhagyank)

Your Mulank (psychic number), Bhagyank (destiny number) and Chaldean name number.

About the Numerology (Mulank & Bhagyank)

Indian numerology, often called Ank Jyotish, links the digits 1 to 9 with the nine grahas: 1 with the Sun, 2 the Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars. It is a simple, approachable entry point into the planetary symbolism of Jyotish and needs only your date of birth and name.

Your Mulank, sometimes called the psychic or root number, comes from the day of the month you were born, reduced to one digit. Someone born on the 23rd has Mulank 2 + 3 = 5, linked with Mercury. The Mulank is said to describe how you see yourself and how you naturally behave day to day.

Your Bhagyank, or destiny number, comes from adding every digit of the full date of birth and reducing to a single digit. It is read as the broader direction of your life — the lessons and opportunities that keep coming back. When Mulank and Bhagyank belong to friendly planets, numerologists say inner nature and outer path support each other.

For names, we use the Chaldean system, which assigns each letter a value from 1 to 8 based on sound rather than alphabet order; 9 is considered sacred and is not assigned to letters. We show both the compound total and the reduced name number. Many people in the diaspora use the name number to compare spellings of a business name or a child's English name.

Numerology is best treated as a mirror for reflection. It cannot replace a full birth chart, which considers the exact positions of planets, but it is a fun and quick way to explore planetary themes, and it doesn't require a birth time.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your date of birth and the name you use.
  2. See Mulank, Bhagyank and Chaldean name number.
  3. Try different spellings to compare.

How we calculate: planetary positions come from the open-source astronomy-engine library (accurate to well under an arc-minute for these purposes), converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Time zones and historical daylight-saving rules are looked up from your birthplace, so a 1985 birth in Chicago or a 1972 birth in Delhi is converted correctly. Houses are whole-sign from the Lagna, and Rahu/Ketu use the mean node. Results are for self-reflection and education; they are not medical, legal or financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my birth time?

No. Numerology uses only the date of birth and the name.

Which name should I enter?

The name you use most often in daily life. You can compare several spellings.

Why is 9 not used for letters in Chaldean numerology?

Traditionally 9 is considered complete and sacred, so letters are given values 1–8 only.

Is numerology part of classical Jyotish?

It is a later, popular branch that borrows the planetary associations of Jyotish.
