About the Moon Sign (Rashi)
In Vedic astrology the Moon sign, or rashi, is usually more important for everyday purposes than the Sun sign. When someone in India says 'my rashi is Kanya', they mean the Moon was in Virgo when they were born. Daily horoscopes, Sade Sati, Gochar (transits) and many muhurat calculations all start from the Moon sign.
The Moon represents the mind (manas): how you feel, react, rest and connect with others. Because it moves through a whole sign in about two and a half days, the Moon sign is far more individual than the Sun sign, which is shared by everyone born in the same month.
To find it accurately we calculate the Moon's sidereal longitude using the Lahiri ayanamsa. If you were born on a day when the Moon changed sign, the birth time decides which rashi is yours — the tool will tell you when that is the case so you can double-check your time.
Along with the rashi we show the sign's lord, element and quality, your Moon nakshatra, and a short original description. You can then read your daily horoscope on our Horoscope page, which is organised by Moon sign rather than Sun sign.
Your Moon sign is a gentle place to start learning Jyotish because it speaks to how you experience life from the inside.
How to use this tool
- Enter birth details.
- Read your rashi, its lord and element.
- Open the daily horoscope for your Moon sign.
How we calculate: planetary positions come from the open-source astronomy-engine library (accurate to well under an arc-minute for these purposes), converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Time zones and historical daylight-saving rules are looked up from your birthplace, so a 1985 birth in Chicago or a 1972 birth in Delhi is converted correctly. Houses are whole-sign from the Lagna, and Rahu/Ketu use the mean node. Results are for self-reflection and education; they are not medical, legal or financial advice.
