Online Puja in the USA: A Practical Guide for Families

How a live online puja works for families in America: time zones, samagri, smoke detectors and how to involve relatives in India, step by step.

For many Indian-American families the nearest temple is an hour away and priests are booked months ahead in festival season. Online puja — a pandit leading the ritual over Zoom, Google Meet or WhatsApp video while the family performs it at home — has become a practical way to keep traditions without compromise.

How it works

You choose the puja and a date. The pandit calculates the muhurat for your city's sunrise and Panchang, converts it to your time zone and sends a samagri list. On the day, the family sets up a small altar, the pandit chants and explains each step, and the family makes the offerings with their own hands. The sankalp is taken in your names and gotra, exactly as in person.

Time zones made simple

India Standard Time does not change with daylight saving, so the gap to the US shifts twice a year: Eastern time is 10h30m behind IST in winter and 9h30m in summer; Pacific is 13h30m in winter or 12h30m in summer behind. A Saturday 9 am puja in New Jersey is Saturday evening in India — a comfortable time for the pandit and for grandparents who want to join.

Samagri from your local Indian store

Almost everything — roli, akshat, kalash, ghee, diyas, havan samagri — is available at Patel Brothers, Apna Bazar or similar stores. We send a list grouped by aisle and suggest substitutes, such as a clean steel pot for a copper kalash.

Havan and smoke detectors

Many US homes and apartments have sensitive smoke alarms. For these we recommend a small ghee lamp in place of an open kund, a short ahuti sequence near an open window, or a puja without havan. The ritual remains complete with mantra and sankalp.

Involving family in India

Add relatives to the same video call. The sankalp can include everyone's names, and elders can bless the family at the end. Many families say this is the part they value most.
