The 12 bhavas

Houses are counted from the Lagna and describe the areas of life where planets act.

Houses fall into useful groups: kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are pillars of strength; trikonas (1, 5, 9) are houses of fortune; dusthanas (6, 8, 12) are houses of challenge and growth; and upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) improve with time and effort.

House 1 — Tanu Bhava

Self, body, personality, overall direction of life

The first house is you: your body, temperament, health and the way you meet the world. Its sign is the Lagna and its lord is one of the most important planets in the chart.

House 2 — Dhana Bhava

Wealth, family, speech, food, early education

The second house holds accumulated resources and the family you grow up in. It also rules speech and what we eat, so it describes both savings and values.

House 3 — Sahaja Bhava

Courage, siblings, communication, short travel, skills

The third house is effort and initiative: younger siblings, writing, media, hobbies and the courage to try. Malefic planets often do well here.

House 4 — Sukha Bhava

Mother, home, property, vehicles, inner peace

The fourth house is the foundation — home, mother, land and emotional security. It is the bottom of the chart, the quiet root of everything else.

House 5 — Putra Bhava

Children, intelligence, creativity, mantra, past merit

The fifth house shows children, learning, creativity, romance and speculative gains. It is a trikona (house of fortune) and reflects purva punya, merit from the past.

House 6 — Ripu Bhava

Health issues, debts, enemies, competition, service

The sixth house deals with obstacles we overcome: illness, litigation, rivals, debt and daily work. Strong malefics here help defeat competition.

House 7 — Kalatra Bhava

Marriage, partnerships, business, public dealings

The seventh house faces the Lagna and shows the other: spouse, business partners and contracts. It is central to marriage matching.

House 8 — Ayur Bhava

Longevity, transformation, secrets, inheritance, research

The eighth house governs sudden change, hidden matters, occult study, in-laws' resources and longevity. It is challenging but deep.

House 9 — Dharma Bhava

Fortune, father, gurus, higher learning, pilgrimage

The ninth house is the most auspicious: luck, faith, teachers, father and long journeys, including pilgrimages and life abroad.

House 10 — Karma Bhava

Career, status, actions, authority

The tenth house is the top of the chart: profession, reputation and the work you are known for in the world.

House 11 — Labha Bhava

Gains, income, friends, networks, wishes fulfilled

The eleventh house shows income, elder siblings, friends and the fulfilment of desires. Almost every planet is considered good here.

House 12 — Vyaya Bhava

Expenses, loss, foreign lands, sleep, liberation

The twelfth house governs letting go: expenses, hospitals, retreats, foreign residence, bed pleasures and moksha. Many emigrants have a strong 12th house.
