About the Daily Panchang

The Panchang ('five limbs') is the Hindu almanac used to choose auspicious times for pujas, fasts and festivals. Its five elements are tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (the Moon's mansion), yoga (a combination of Sun and Moon positions) and karana (half of a tithi). Every Hindu festival — from Ekadashi to Diwali — is defined by these elements.

A tithi is each 12° that the Moon gains on the Sun; there are 30 in a lunar month, split into the bright half (Shukla paksha) and the dark half (Krishna paksha). The nakshatra is the Moon's position among the 27 lunar mansions. Yoga is calculated from the sum of the Sun's and Moon's sidereal longitudes, divided into 27 parts, and karana is half a tithi, with eleven names that repeat through the month.

Here is the crucial point for families in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia: Panchang elements change at specific moments, and the traditional rule takes the element prevailing at local sunrise. So the tithi on a given day in London or Toronto can differ from the one in India, and even New York and Vancouver, or Sydney and Perth, can differ from each other. That is why festival dates sometimes fall on different days in the USA, UK, Canada or Australia than in India.

Our Panchang computes everything for the location you choose — London, Leicester, Birmingham, Toronto, Brampton, Vancouver, Sydney, Melbourne, New York or anywhere else — including local sunrise, sunset, moonrise and the exact time each element ends, shown in your local time zone with India time alongside.

Use it to plan an Ekadashi fast, choose a time for a home puja, or simply to stay connected with the rhythm of the Hindu calendar wherever you live.

How to use this tool

  1. Pick a date and search your city (defaults to your saved place).
  2. Read tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana with end times.
  3. See sunrise, sunset and Rahu Kaal in local time and IST.

How we calculate: planetary positions come from the open-source astronomy-engine library (accurate to well under an arc-minute for these purposes), converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Time zones and historical daylight-saving rules are looked up from your birthplace, so a 1985 birth in Chicago or a 1972 birth in Delhi is converted correctly. Houses are whole-sign from the Lagna, and Rahu/Ketu use the mean node. Results are for self-reflection and education; they are not medical, legal or financial advice.
