Sade Sati & Saturn Return

Your past and future Sade Sati phases, Dhaiya periods and Saturn return dates.

About the Sade Sati & Saturn Return

Sade Sati — literally 'seven and a half' — is the period of roughly seven and a half years when Saturn transits the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Because Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac, most people experience Sade Sati two or three times in a lifetime.

The period is traditionally divided into three phases of about two and a half years. The rising phase (Saturn in the 12th from the Moon) is associated with expenses, travel and letting go. The peak phase (Saturn over the Moon) can feel emotionally heavy and asks for patience and good routines. The setting phase (Saturn in the 2nd) is linked with family responsibilities and finances. Saturn's retrograde motion can stretch or repeat a phase, so actual dates differ from the simple 2.5-year rule.

Our calculator scans Saturn's actual sidereal motion from your birth onwards, so it captures those retrograde back-and-forth movements and shows each phase with exact start and end dates. It also lists Dhaiya (Kantaka Shani in the 4th from the Moon and Ashtama Shani in the 8th), the two-and-a-half-year periods that are often discussed alongside Sade Sati.

We also calculate your Saturn returns — the moments when transiting Saturn comes back to its exact natal position, around ages 29–30, 58–59 and 88. In both Western and Vedic traditions these are seen as coming-of-age milestones, when life asks you to take full ownership of your path.

Saturn is a teacher, not a punisher. Many people do their best, most grounded work during Sade Sati. Traditional supports include Shani Shanti puja, Hanuman Chalisa on Saturdays, service to elders and the needy, and simply keeping commitments.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter birth details.
  2. See whether Sade Sati is running now and its phase.
  3. Review past/future cycles, Dhaiya and Saturn return dates.

How we calculate: planetary positions come from the open-source astronomy-engine library (accurate to well under an arc-minute for these purposes), converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Time zones and historical daylight-saving rules are looked up from your birthplace, so a 1985 birth in Chicago or a 1972 birth in Delhi is converted correctly. Houses are whole-sign from the Lagna, and Rahu/Ketu use the mean node. Results are for self-reflection and education; they are not medical, legal or financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No. Its effect depends on Saturn's role in your chart. For some Lagnas Saturn is a yoga-karaka and Sade Sati brings achievement.

Why are my phases not exactly 2.5 years?

Saturn's retrograde loops can take it back into the previous sign; we follow its actual motion.

What is Dhaiya?

Saturn's transit through the 4th or 8th from the Moon — about 2.5 years each.

What remedies are traditional?

Shani Shanti puja, Hanuman Chalisa, Saturday charity of black sesame or urad, and disciplined routines.
