Transits (Gochar)

Where the planets are today and which houses they activate from your Lagna and Moon.

About the Transits (Gochar)

Gochar means 'movement' — the current positions of the planets as they travel through the zodiac. In Vedic astrology, transits are read against your birth chart, usually counting houses from the natal Moon sign and from the Lagna. The same Saturn position can be a challenge for one person and a blessing for another, depending on which of their houses it occupies.

The slow planets matter most. Saturn spends about two and a half years in a sign, Jupiter about one year, and Rahu and Ketu around eighteen months. Their transits set the backdrop. The Sun, Mercury and Venus move through a sign in about a month, Mars in about six weeks, and the Moon in two and a half days, so they colour shorter windows.

Classical texts describe favourable transit houses for each planet counted from the Moon. Jupiter, for example, is traditionally considered supportive in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from the Moon, while Saturn is welcomed in the 3rd, 6th and 11th. Our table shows each transiting planet, its sign and degree, whether it is retrograde, and the house it occupies from both your Lagna and your Moon.

Transits work together with dashas. A good transit during a supportive dasha tends to deliver visible results; a difficult transit in a strong dasha is often milder than feared. That is why a professional reading always looks at both.

Check back whenever a slow planet changes sign — those are the moments when the feel of a year shifts.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter birth details.
  2. See where each planet is today.
  3. Read the house it activates from your Lagna and Moon.

How we calculate: planetary positions come from the open-source astronomy-engine library (accurate to well under an arc-minute for these purposes), converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Time zones and historical daylight-saving rules are looked up from your birthplace, so a 1985 birth in Chicago or a 1972 birth in Delhi is converted correctly. Houses are whole-sign from the Lagna, and Rahu/Ketu use the mean node. Results are for self-reflection and education; they are not medical, legal or financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Which is more important, transits from Moon or Lagna?

Traditional Gochar is read from the Moon; many astrologers also check from the Lagna. We show both.

What does retrograde mean?

From Earth, a planet appears to move backwards for a while. In Jyotish a retrograde planet is considered strong and its themes revisit the past.

How often should I check transits?

Slow-planet changes (Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu/Ketu) are the key moments; monthly is plenty for most people.

Are transits enough to predict events?

No — they need to be read alongside your dasha and natal chart.
