Smoke-free havan in Australia: strata, alarms & fire bans

Havan in Australian homes: strata by-laws, smoke alarms, Total Fire Ban days and the smoke-free method for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

Published 2026-11-01

A havan is at the heart of many pujas, from Griha Pravesh to Navagraha shanti. In Australia, three things make a traditional open-fire havan tricky: strata rules in apartment buildings, sensitive smoke alarms, and the fire season. This guide covers each in general terms and explains the smoke-free method many families in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth now use.

Strata and owners corporations

If you live in an apartment or townhouse, your building is likely run as a strata scheme. The name differs by state: a strata scheme in New South Wales, an owners corporation in Victoria, a body corporate in Queensland and a strata company in Western Australia. Each has by-laws or rules that can cover open flames, smoke drifting into common areas, nuisance to neighbours and the use of balconies.

  • Read your by-laws, or ask the strata manager, before planning any open flame.
  • Balconies are often treated differently from the inside of your lot, and many buildings ban open fires and barbecues other than approved types on balconies.
  • If an alarm in your unit is linked to the building's fire panel, a false alarm can bring the fire brigade, and some buildings pass the call-out cost on to the owner. Check how your building handles this.

Smoke alarms

Every Australian home is required to have working smoke alarms, and the rules are set by each state. Queensland has some of the strictest requirements: interconnected photoelectric alarms in every bedroom, in hallways and on every storey, being phased in for all homes. Photoelectric alarms are particularly sensitive to the kind of slow, visible smoke a havan produces. Whatever state you are in, never cover, disable or remove an alarm for a puja; it is unsafe and may breach your lease or strata rules.

Total Fire Ban days

During the warmer months, state fire authorities can declare Total Fire Ban days and publish Fire Danger Ratings. The rules mainly restrict fires in the open air, which matters if you were thinking of a havan kund in the backyard, on a patio or on a balcony. The details differ by state and region, so check on the day with your state's fire authority: the NSW Rural Fire Service, the CFA in Victoria, Queensland's fire service, or DFES in Western Australia. If a ban is in place, move the ritual indoors using the smoke-free method or postpone the outdoor part.

The smoke-free havan method

Our smoke-free havan offers three options, chosen to suit your home:

  • Tirth havan with home ahuti. The pandit lights the full havan kund at a tirth in India and performs every ahuti there, live on video. At each Svaha, your family offers akshat and flowers into a clean bowl at home. There is no smoke at your home, so this suits apartments, strata buildings and Total Fire Ban days.
  • Ghee-deep havan. A single pure-ghee diya on a metal tray is the Agni. Drops of ghee are offered into the flame at each mantra, and samagri is placed in a plate rather than burned. This gives very little smoke, but test it with the alarm first.
  • Low-smoke mini kund. A small copper kund, a few dry samidha and fine samagri, finished in about fifteen to twenty minutes. Only where your by-laws, local rules and the day's fire danger allow, and never on a Total Fire Ban day outdoors.

The sankalp is taken in your names and gotra in every case. Shastra places the weight on sankalp, mantra and devotion, and offering through a priest on the family's behalf is a long-established practice.

Time zones across Australia

Australia has several time zones, and not every state uses daylight saving:

  • Sydney and Melbourne: AEDT (UTC+11) from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of India; AEST (UTC+10) for the rest of the year, 4 hours 30 minutes ahead.
  • Brisbane: Queensland does not use daylight saving, so Brisbane is on AEST all year, 4 hours 30 minutes ahead of India.
  • Perth: AWST (UTC+8) all year, 2 hours 30 minutes ahead of India.

Because Australia is ahead of India, a Saturday 10 am puja in Sydney in summer is 4:30 am in India. We usually suggest late-morning or afternoon slots on the east coast, and mornings work naturally for Perth. Every muhurat is calculated for your city and given in local time.

Which pujas include a havan?

Most families ask about Griha Pravesh, Satyanarayan puja, Navagraha shanti, Rudrabhishek and Maha Mrityunjaya jaap. All of these can be done with the smoke-free method. For a new apartment in a strata building, the tirth havan option is usually the simplest choice.

Renters and new apartments

If you rent, your lease may also mention open flames or smoking indoors, and a damaged ceiling or soot marks can affect your bond. Telling the property manager what you plan, and choosing the tirth method, avoids any argument later. In brand-new apartments, fresh paint and new carpets show soot quickly, which is another reason many families in new towers in Parramatta, Box Hill, Southbank or South Brisbane keep the havan at the tirth and the rest of the puja at home.

A short checklist

  • Check your by-laws and whether your alarm links to the building panel.
  • Check the fire danger rating if any part will be outdoors.
  • Choose the method with the pandit when booking.
  • Set up away from alarms, curtains and air-conditioning vents.
  • Keep water and a metal tray nearby for any flame.

Frequently asked questions

Is a havan allowed in a strata apartment?

It depends on your by-laws. Many restrict open flames or smoke. The tirth havan option creates no smoke at your home, so it usually fits within strata rules; check with your strata manager if unsure.

Can we do a backyard havan on a Total Fire Ban day?

Generally no; Total Fire Ban rules restrict fires in the open. Check your state fire authority and use the smoke-free indoor method instead.

Will a ghee diya set off a photoelectric alarm?

A trimmed ghee wick gives very little smoke, but photoelectric alarms are sensitive. Keep it well away from the alarm and test it beforehand. The tirth method avoids the question entirely.

Is a smoke-free havan still a complete havan?

Yes. In the tirth method the fire is real and the ahutis are made by the pandit with your sankalp, while your family takes part live from home.
