Graha means 'one who seizes'

Jyotish uses nine grahas: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu and Ketu. They are called grahas because they 'grasp' or influence the mind and events, not because all of them are physical planets.
