About Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi, the birthday of Lord Ganesha, falls on the Shukla Chaturthi (4th day of the waxing moon) of Bhadrapada. Families bring home a murti of Ganesha and worship him for one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days before visarjan.

Ganesha is believed to have been born at midday, so the sthapana and puja are done in Madhyahna, the middle fifth of the daytime between your own sunrise and sunset, while Chaturthi tithi is running. The festival is kept on the day whose Madhyahna overlaps Chaturthi.

A simple Ganesh Chaturthi at home in Vancouver

1. Clean the place and set up the murti on a red or yellow cloth, facing east or north if possible.
2. Begin with a sankalp and invoke Ganesha (avahan and prana-pratishtha, or a simple prayer if no priest is present).
3. Offer durva grass, red flowers, modak or laddoo, and light a lamp and incense.
4. Do aarti morning and evening for the days you keep him; for visarjan, many families abroad immerse an eco-friendly clay murti in a bucket or tub at home and use the water for plants.

Items you cannot find locally can usually be replaced: an Indian grocer or temple shop in Vancouver normally stocks the basics, and local flowers are fine.
