About the Pitra Dosha Check
Pitra dosha, also written Pitru dosh, is the name given to chart combinations that tradition links with unfinished duties toward one's ancestors (pitras). It is not one precise rule in the classical texts; instead, astrologers look at a handful of patterns involving the Sun (the karaka of the father), the 9th house (the house of father, dharma and ancestors), its lord, and the nodes Rahu and Ketu, and sometimes Saturn and the Moon.
This tool calculates your sidereal chart and checks the combinations most widely used in practice: the Sun with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn in the same sign; Rahu or Ketu in the 9th house; Saturn in the 9th house; the 9th lord placed with Rahu or Ketu; and the Moon with a node, which some families read as the maternal line. Each combination found is listed so you can see exactly why the result appears.
We grade the result as mild, present or strong depending on how many of the core combinations (Sun with a node, a node in the 9th, or the 9th lord with a node) appear. A single secondary pattern alone is shown as a mild indication. The result is a screening, not a judgement; an astrologer reading the whole chart and dasha will weigh it with everything else.
The traditional response to Pitra dosha is gentle and positive: shraddh and tarpan for ancestors, especially during Pitru Paksha and on Amavasya, feeding Brahmins and the needy, and charity in the names of departed family members. For families living abroad, our pandits perform Pitru dosh shraddh, tarpan and Narayan Bali online, with the sankalp in your name and gotra and a live video link.
How to use this tool
- Enter your birth date, time and place.
- See which ancestral combinations, if any, appear in your chart.
- Read the traditional remedies, and book a shraddh or tarpan if you wish.
How we calculate: planetary positions come from the open-source astronomy-engine library (accurate to well under an arc-minute for these purposes), converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Time zones and historical daylight-saving rules are looked up from your birthplace, so a 1985 birth in Chicago or a 1972 birth in Delhi is converted correctly. Houses are whole-sign from the Lagna, and Rahu/Ketu use the mean node. Results are for self-reflection and education; they are not medical, legal or financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
What causes Pitra dosha?
Tradition links it with ancestral duties left undone. In the chart it is read from the Sun, the 9th house and its lord when they are joined by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn.
Is Pitra dosha harmful?
It is read as a tendency toward obstacles in family, children or career, never as a curse. Most astrologers recommend simple ancestral rites, which are beneficial for everyone.
When should Pitra dosha remedies be done?
Pitru Paksha (the dark fortnight before Navratri), every Amavasya, and the death anniversary (tithi) of the ancestor are the traditional times.
Can it be done from abroad?
Yes. The sankalp can be taken in your name and gotra while the pandit performs the rite, and you can join by video.
