About Krishna Janmashtami
Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna on the Krishna Ashtami (8th day of the waning moon) of Bhadrapada in the purnimanta calendar (Shravana in the amanta calendar). Devotees fast and worship at midnight, the time of Krishna's birth.
The main worship is at Nishita Kaal, the Hindu midnight of your own city. The date follows the Smarta rule used by Drik Panchang: the night on which Ashtami runs at Nishita, except that when the next day begins in Ashtami and Rohini nakshatra (Krishna's birth star) runs at that night's midnight, the next day is kept. Vaishnava communities and ISKCON temples sometimes keep a different day; follow your temple when they differ.
A simple Janmashtami at home in Singapore
- Decorate a small cradle (jhula) for Laddu Gopal or bal Krishna, with flowers and a lamp.
- Fast through the day as your health allows; many keep a phalahari fast.
- At Nishita Kaal, bathe the deity with panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar), dress him, and offer butter, sugar candy (mishri) and tulsi.
- Sing bhajans, read the birth story, do aarti and rock the cradle; share prasad.
Items you cannot find locally can usually be replaced: an Indian grocer or temple shop in Singapore normally stocks the basics, and local flowers are fine.
