How these dates and times are calculated

Navratri begins on the day when Pratipada is running at your own sunrise. Ghatasthapana (setting up the kalash) is traditionally done in the first third of the daytime while Pratipada runs; if that is not possible, Abhijit muhurat around midday is the usual alternative. Some panchangs also avoid Chitra nakshatra and Vaidhriti yoga; we show the plain windows, so ask your priest if your family follows those rules.

Vijayadashami is the day whose afternoon (aparahna) overlaps Dashami tithi. Times are computed for each city's coordinates and time zone.

A simple Navratri at home

1. Fill a clay or copper kalash with water, place mango leaves and a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top, and set it on a bed of soil sown with barley.
2. Light a lamp (an akhand jyoti if you can keep it safely) and worship Durga each day, ideally with the form of that day.
3. Read the Durga Saptashati or chant "Om Dum Durgayai Namah" as you are able.
4. On Ashtami or Navami, many families do kanya puja; on Vijayadashami, the kalash is honoured and the barley shoots are shared as blessings.
