Please note

These rites are an act of love and remembrance. Grief takes its own time; if it feels overwhelming, please lean on family and consider a bereavement counsellor.

Which puja is done for peace for a departed soul?

Starting dakshina; the final amount is confirmed before the puja. We do not promise outcomes: families perform these pujas to seek blessings, as tradition describes.

When do families consider this puja?

  • The recent passing of a parent, spouse or relative
  • The first-year rites (masik shraddh, barsi) are coming up
  • Ashes need to be immersed in the Ganga from abroad
  • The yearly death anniversary (punyatithi)

What can the family do at home?

  • Light a lamp each evening for the first 13 days and keep a photo with a garland.
  • Recite the Gita, Vishnu Sahasranama or Garuda Purana readings as your family tradition suggests.
  • Note the tithi of death; it sets the dates for monthly and yearly Shraddh.
  • Take care of yourselves; grief takes time, and a counsellor can help if it feels too heavy.

What should you tell the pandit at the sankalp?

The departed's full name, gotra and relation, the date and tithi of death, and the wish 'for the peace and sadgati of the departed soul.'

How does the online puja work from abroad?

Our pandits in India lead the puja live on Zoom, Google Meet, WhatsApp video. Your family performs the offerings at home with a samagri list we send in advance, and the muhurat is confirmed in writing in your local time and IST. You receive the recording afterwards. Frequently asked questions

Which puja is done for the peace of a departed soul?

Shraddh with tarpan and pind daan, and recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama or Gita, are the core practices.

Can Shraddh be done online if we live abroad?

Yes. The pandit performs it in India while you take the sankalp on video.

How can we send ashes to India?

See our asthi visarjan page; our pandits can immerse the ashes at a tirth on your behalf and share video or photos.

What is the tithi of death and why does it matter?

It is the lunar day on which the person passed; monthly and yearly Shraddh follow it rather than the calendar date.

Is it too late if we missed the first-year rites?

No. Shraddh can be performed in Pitru Paksha or on any Amavasya.

Who can take the sankalp?

Traditionally a son or close male relative; many families today have a daughter or spouse take it.
