Which puja is done for pitru dosh?

Starting dakshina; the final amount is confirmed before the puja. We do not promise outcomes: families perform these pujas to seek blessings, as tradition describes.

When do families consider this puja?

  • The chart shows the Sun or 9th house with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn
  • Shraddh for a parent or grandparent has not been done for years
  • The family does not know whether an ancestor's last rites were completed
  • Pitru Paksha or Amavasya is approaching and the family wants to remember its ancestors

What can the family do at home?

  • Amavasya: offer water with black sesame (til) facing south, remembering ancestors by name.
  • Feed a cow, crows, a dog or a person in need on Amavasya or Shraddh days.
  • Light a lamp under a peepal tree on Saturdays, if your family follows this.
  • Keep photos of ancestors in a respectful place, ideally not in the prayer altar.

What should you tell the pandit at the sankalp?

The performer's name and gotra, the names of the ancestors (father's and mother's side if known), their relation, and the tithi of death if known, with the wish 'for the peace of our ancestors and their blessings on the family.'

Frequently asked questions

What are the symptoms of Pitru dosh?

Tradition associates it with recurring obstacles in family matters, such as marriage or children, and with Shraddh being neglected. These signs have many ordinary causes too, so look at the chart and the family's history rather than assume.

What is the remedy for Pitru dosh?

Shraddh with tarpan and pind daan, especially in Pitru Paksha or on Amavasya; Narayan Bali when rites were incomplete.

Can Shraddh be done online from abroad?

Yes. The pandit performs it in India while you join on video and take the sankalp; pind daan can also be done at Prayagraj on your behalf.

Who should perform the Shraddh?

Traditionally a son, grandson or the nearest relative; today daughters and spouses also perform it in many families.

When is the best time?

Pitru Paksha (the dark fortnight before Navratri), the ancestor's death tithi, or any Amavasya.

Is Pitru dosh a curse?

No. It is better understood as an unfinished duty of remembrance, which the family can lovingly complete.
