  • A baby's first birthday or a milestone birthday
  • A child recovering from illness or a hospital stay
  • Frequent childhood illnesses the family wants to pray about
  • A child born in a nakshatra (such as Gandmool) for which the family tradition suggests a shanti

What can the family do at home?

  • Parents can chant the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra 11 times at bedtime.
  • Teach older children a short Hanuman Chalisa doha or the Gayatri mantra.
  • Mark birthdays with a lamp, a small prayer and a donation in the child's name.
  • Keep vaccinations and check-ups on schedule and follow the paediatrician's advice.

What should you tell the pandit at the sankalp?

The child's name, the parents' names and gotra, the child's birth details, and the wish 'for our child's health, long life and protection.'
