About Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is kept on the full moon (Purnima) of Shravana. Sisters tie a rakhi on their brothers' wrists and pray for their well-being, and brothers promise to protect them. Many families also do the Shravani Upakarma (changing the sacred thread) on this day.

The rakhi is tied while Purnima is running and Bhadra (the Vishti karana in the first half of Purnima) is over. Following Drik Panchang, we take the first day on which a Bhadra-free part of Purnima falls between sunrise and the end of Pradosh Kaal; the window shown is that stretch, with the afternoon (aparahna) part noted as the traditionally preferred time when it is available. If no such stretch exists, the next morning is used while Purnima lasts.

A simple Rakhi at home in San Jose

  1. Prepare a thali with the rakhi, roli or kumkum, rice, a lamp and sweets.
  2. The sister applies tilak and rice to the brother's forehead, ties the rakhi on his right wrist and offers a sweet.
  3. Do aarti with the lamp; the brother gives a gift and his blessing or promise.
  4. If you live far apart, many families tie the rakhi on a video call at the right local time, or the brother ties a rakhi sent by post.

Items you cannot find locally can usually be replaced: an Indian grocer or temple shop in San Jose normally stocks the basics, and local flowers are fine.
