How these dates and times are calculated
The fast is kept on the day when Chaturthi tithi is running at moonrise in your city. Moonrise is given the way Drik Panchang gives it: the moment the centre of the Moon reaches the horizon, without refraction, so it may be a few minutes later than an astronomy app. Hills, buildings and clouds can delay the moment you actually see it.
Because moonrise and the tithi are computed for each city's own coordinates and time zone, the date can differ from India. In a few places Chaturthi runs at moonrise on neither evening; there we use the day on which Chaturthi runs at sunrise and say so.
A simple Karva Chauth at home
- Eat sargi before sunrise if your family follows the custom, then fast through the day as your health allows.
- In the evening, women gather for the Karva Chauth katha and puja with a karva (clay pot) of water, a lamp and sweets.
- When the Moon rises, look at it through a sieve, offer water (arghya) to the Moon and then see your husband's face.
- The husband offers the first sip of water and bite of food to end the fast.
Customs differ between regions and families; follow your own tradition where it differs from this outline.

Why can't I just convert the India time?
Because the times depend on your own sunrise, sunset or moonrise and on when the tithi runs in your time zone. Converting the India time gives the wrong window, and sometimes the wrong day.
How accurate are these times?
They are calculated for each city's coordinates and time zone with the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac, following the rules used by Drik Panchang, and we compared sample cities with Drik Panchang's published times. Family and temple traditions may follow a different rule; follow your own priest when they differ.
