About Karva Chauth

Karva Chauth is kept on the Krishna Chaturthi of Kartika in the purnimanta calendar (Ashvin in the amanta calendar). Married women, and increasingly couples together, fast from sunrise until they see the Moon, then offer water to the Moon and break the fast.

The fast is kept on the day when Chaturthi tithi is running at moonrise in your city. Moonrise is given the way Drik Panchang gives it: the moment the centre of the Moon reaches the horizon, without refraction, so it may be a few minutes later than an astronomy app. Hills, buildings and clouds can delay the moment you actually see it.

A simple Karva Chauth at home in Phoenix

  1. Eat sargi before sunrise if your family follows the custom, then fast through the day as your health allows.
  2. In the evening, women gather for the Karva Chauth katha and puja with a karva (clay pot) of water, a lamp and sweets.
  3. When the Moon rises, look at it through a sieve, offer water (arghya) to the Moon and then see your husband's face.
  4. The husband offers the first sip of water and bite of food to end the fast.

Items you cannot find locally can usually be replaced: an Indian grocer or temple shop in Phoenix normally stocks the basics, and local flowers are fine.
